"1 in 5"

Today, I am writing about something that is insanely serious that no human being should ever take lightly. Many of you may or may not be aware of the fact that 1 in 5 women are sexually assaulted while in college. Many of you have probably heard of the name Brock Turner, in case you have not, Brock put in THREE MONTHS of jail time for raping a woman behind a dumpster. Brock Turner is not the point of this article.

Now to anyone who has ever been sexually assaulted, my heart breaks for you, it breaks for the pain that you have been put through and it breaks because being sexually assaulted should not be an issue. And I know, that when I say that, I still can not come any where near close to how you feel. I know that my hurt for you in no way makes this any easier on you. I can not put myself in your shoes, I can not grasp what you are going through. But, my heart hurts for what you have to pay for someone else's mistake. I recognize that I in no way am in a position to write on your behalf. But, I do want you to know that I stand right by your side.

I am writing because even though I am not "1 in 5" ,when I walk through parking lots I make sure my finger is on the pepper spray just in case it needs to be used. I am writing because people have voices that deserve to be heard. I am writing because I can not imagine being one of the "1 in 5". I am writing because each "1" of those "1 in 5" has a name. Each "1" has a story. That story was interrupted by someone's mistake that was not their own. Each "1" does not deserve to be another number and just known as "1" of the "1 in 5". These are human beings, who did not wish this upon themselves. Behind every "1" of the "1 in 5" there are people with lives. These people are not a statistic, they do not deserve to be thrown into a category,

Brock Turner and his puny, little jail sentence may have been talked about but there is a human being behind this case whose life has been altered forever because of another person's mistake. She is not just "1 in 5", she is a living person with a family, friends, a life, and a story. Do not lose sight of the fact that this is an issue. You do not need to sit back and act like it is not happening just because it has not happened to you. It is a problem that we all need to worry about our daughters, sisters, friends and nieces. It is a problem that woman can not feel safe at their own college campus, or out with their friends. it is a problem that as a society this has only been talked about recently because of one man's prison sentence. Do not make human beings believe they are at fault for something beyond their control. You have a say in supporting others, do so.
